Mancos is located in the southwest corner of Colorado near the four corners and is the home of Mesa Verde National Park. Mancos is seeped in history and is known as a place "Where the West Still Lives" and is "the Gateway to Mesa Verde."
Mancos has been home to the Ancestral Puebloan people since at least the 10th century. The Anasazi built elaborate homes in the caves outside of Mancos. Centuries later, Ute and Navajo tribes lived in the valley as well. In the 18th century, Spanish explores established the "Old Spanish Trail" through the Mancos valley. The town of Mancos began to grow in the 1870's and 80's. Settlers came to mine for gold in the mountains, cut timber, ranch cattle, and build businesses. Today, Mancos is home to about 1,330 people. The High School is the oldest continuously operating high school in the state of Colorado. The town receives many visitors each year who marvel at the beauty of the Mancos valley. |
